While a hunter go for hunting, he has to select which target that he has to shoot. As some of the animals are protected.

Now that we have a slight understanding of the basic principles of deer hunting, and some of its many problems, why don’t you, in fancy, come along up to the Maine wilderness—where the bucks are big and the bears are black—on a little deer hunting trip? I will be your guide—the best guide in six-teen counties—but don’t let it get around ’cause if you do I will be so busy guiding that I will have no time for hunting, and I like to hunt. We will have to hoof it into camp from the highway. It’s just a little hike, but we had better hurry to make it before dark. Not that there is anything to worry about, but the steaks will be cold unless we’re there to eat them. Hear that noise in the distance?

Another of those bobcats starting out for his evening hunting. We may hear an owl before dark, but they usually keep quiet until later. Hold it! See that bull moose? No, not there. Over there by those willows down by the edge of the bog. Big one, ain’t he? Don’t try to shoot one of those fellows. They’re protected, but I am afraid that it will not do much good. They’ve got moose sickness and until the biologists can find some way to prevent that, the moose haven’t much chance of making a comeback here in Maine.

Well! There’s the camp. And there’s our host, waiting to greet us. You know what he will say? “Welcome to the camp. You should have been here last week. The conditions were perfect then and the deer were everywhere. Now it’s not so good.” That’s the standard approach. It sets up an alibi. If you don’t get a deer, that lets him out. It ain’t his fault, but the weather’s. All of you who have ever hunted or fished or are married men, know the value of a good reason for not bringing home the bacon, or delivering the goods. He happens to be right this time and conditions don’t look good for tomorrow. But never mind, conditions can change overnight here in Maine.

Well, here we are back in camp. No deer today. That dry, hard, frozen ground, covered with frozen leaves and sticks, was so noisy that we spooked every deer within miles of camp and when we tried to drive one to a stand, they all ran the wrong way. We all feel better now as we gather in the living room with our bellies full of steaks cut from the deer I killed a week ago. Sure it’s illegal to eat it, but who is there among us who doesn’t think forbidden fruit the sweetest, and besides, the game warden is quite a ways from here.

Things look better for tomorrow. There was a circle around the moon last night. A snow bank in the south west this afternoon. The scent of snow has been in my nose for the last two hours and the wind is beginning to act kind of shifty. Hear that owl? Notice how hollow he sounds? Yep! Snow before morning and that means a deer before night. So drag your chairs up to the fireplace, see that there’s a full bottle on the table—remember that now is the only time that a bottle has any place on a hunting trip—and I will tell you of a hunt that occurred a while back.

It is always better for hunters to check which animal which is protected and which one that they can shoot.

Deer hunting began years ago as a way for men to provide for their families. Over the years, a man’s stature began to be measured by how well he could hunt and provide food. In many Indian tribes, the elders were the best hunters or the group. As America was developed, this became a trait of the white civilization as well. Through the years, trophy deer hunting has moved past racial lines and the need to provide food for one’s family. However, if you spend one day in a hunting club, you will find stature is still measured by the biggest trophy or kill.

There is an understanding between hunters that the bigger the kill the better the hunter. While this is not always the case, it can sometimes be true that bigger is better. Trophy deer are measured by the number of points on their racks. Points are the knobs or ends or an antler rack. As a deer grows, its rack will also grow bigger to include more points and with age comes understanding. The more seasons a trophy deer has survived, the more likely they are to survive another. Just like any other animal, a deer will learn to adapt its routine to avoid hunters. Deer will learn what gun shots sound like and avoid any areas they hear them coming from.

These patterns of learning often lead to the local stories of the one big trophy buck that always gets away. While some towns may very well have one predominate buck that has been around a few years, there are stories of bucks living through generations. Some families will have a story of the one that escaped the dad, the son, and maybe even the grandfather. This is not a possible occurrence though, most deer live to be less than 15 years old and deer in a denser population will survive less than that.

When checking in a trophy dear, you will realize the excitement that goes along with it. Pictures will be taken with the dead animal. Strangers may even request a quick photo op. If your trophy deer is the biggest or first of the season, you are likely to find your picture in the paper in most small towns. In many small town papers, the deer hunting announcements can take up a whole page. Along with these pictures, go the bragging rights for the next year. That is until the next season.

To many hunters, bagging that famous buck is not always the goal. Many still hunt simply for the love of the sport. They simply enjoy the thrill of man verses beast. It is more about the hunt and the excitement than the actual kill. These hunters would rather spend a week in the infamous deer woods awaiting the kill, than get their kill on the first day and go back home. However, if you ask even these dedicated hunters, they would tell you getting the big trophy deer sure wouldn’t be a disappointment.

, Alabama is the place to find trophy bucks. Alabama maintains dozens of properties throughout the state to breed and grow big bucks and does. In total, about 5,000 acres of land is preserved and maintained by lodges and farms to nurture the deer population and virtually guarantee a better hunting experience for every hunter who visits.

These farms feed a special diet to the deer to ensure large bucks with well developed antlers. The feed is full of iron, clay pees, grain sorghum, and other protein sources to assist in growth. In recent years, the ratio of bucks to does has increased season by season. The ratio in the 2000-2001 season was reported at 3 to 1, and by the 2002-2003 season, the ratio was down 2.2 to 1 in the preserves, ensuring that the population flourishes.

Alabama has two seasons, both bow hunting and firearm hunting, like many other states. The dates vary year to year, with bow hunting starting in mid-October, and gun season starting at the end of November. Be sure to check with the Alabama Department of Wildlife for exact dates. Another option many farms offer to hunters is a training season often held in the winter. A guide will take you out into the woods where you’ll learn the Alabama landscape and how to best use it to your advantage in searching out your trophy buck. Many of the farms also cater to each specific hunter’s goals and preferences. Often, hunters have the option to hunt with a guide who knows the property intimately, or they can always choose to go it alone. Either way, the farm is there to assist you in reaching your hunting goal.

Alabama deer hunting has become a profitable business for those in the state. Hunters have flocked to Alabama to seek out trophy bucks for decades; it becomes an experience unmatched. Because of the minimal hunting restrictions and the many big buck opportunities throughout the state, hunting has become a business beneficial for all involved.

When choosing a location for your deer hunting trip, the hunter doesn’t need to look any further than Texas. As the second largest state, Texas has plenty of land for the hunter to bag a trophy. Before making reservations though, be sure that you’ve fully researched all Texas laws for deer hunting.

1) Firearms

As with any state, Texas has regulations about which kind of weapons can be used with a particular species. Rimfire ammunition may not be used under any circumstances for whitetail, mule deer, or antelope. Also, pellet guns, air guns, fully automatic firearms, as well as silencers are illegal for deer hunting.

2) Hunting Hours

During open season hunting hours for all game begin one half hour before sunrise, and one half hour after sunset. Check online to find specific sunrise and sunset times for the area and dates you’ll be hunting.

3) Hunting Season

Open season dates vary throughout Texas for the type of deer you’ll be hunting. For example, pronghorn antelope may be hunted by permit only for only one week of the year, usually the first of October. Whitetail deer range depending on location, but open season is generally between the end of October and the middle of January. Mule deer season also varies by region, with archery allowed from the end of September to the end of October, and firearm season between the middle of November and the first part of December.

4) County Restrictions

Not only should state laws be considered, but a hunter needs to know about any local regulations set up by the county he’ll be hunting in. In many counties certain areas are illegal to discharge firearms or arrows. Even during hunting season, you cannot possess a firearm, bow and arrow, or crossbow in the land or water of the Aransas or Poesta Rivers, or in the state-owned riverbeds of McMullen and La Salle counties. These are only a few locations, so be sure to check local hunting regulations.

5) Public Areas

During deer season, Texas has regulations for public areas; in designated public hunting areas all hunters must have on their person a permit. Hunting is illegal in wildlife sanctuaries, national, federal, and state parks or refuges, as is discharging a firearm on a public road or any area designated as a propagation or nesting area.

6) Harvest Rules

It is required in Texas to immediately log the kill of a whitetail in ink on the back of the hunting license. However this is not required for mule deer or whitetail when taken with special permits, such as MLD permits. Some counties also require that the deer have a specific antler size; this size is measured by the distance between the antlers.

As long as the hunter does a little research and is aware and respects the laws of the area he’s hunting, he’ll have a Texas deer hunting experience to remember.
