For the deer hunter looking to stay in practice in the many months between seasons, he need not look further than his own computer. There are many deer hunting games available both free on the internet, and for a price at the electronics store. This will allow the hunter to work on his aim and reaction time, and stave off some of the boredom he may suffer from in the off season. There are a few options available, all having different benefits:

Hunting Unlimited 4

The biggest pro to this game is that it isn’t just deer hunting, a hunter can try any number of other species. And if deer is all that is preferred, there are still 50 different scenarios and weapons available to practice with! While this game has a heftier price tag, it is well worth it for the hunter who gets bored easily and likes to try new things.

Cabela’s Big Game Hunter 2007

This game also offers the hunter the choice of hunting any number of other species. It focuses not so much on the hunt itself, but on the excitement of the hunt. This is also the 10th anniversary edition and is sponsored by one of the biggest names in hunting gear. While this game also has a bigger price tag, for the adrenaline junkie hunter, it’s a win.

Deer Drive

This game focuses only on deer. It is 3-D arcade style, and allows the hunter to enter into an area with deer, moose, and other wild animals to choose from. It is available online through the publisher’s webiste.

ESPN Deer Hunting

This game is one of the best available for deer hunting, but that may be because it is totally free. It is available through ESPN’s website and Flash will be necessary to play, but most computers already have this installed anyway. The hunter can choose the type of stand or blind he wants to use, and while the graphics are a little on the basic side, for a free game, there certainly isn’t anything to complain about!

Deer Hunter

This is possibly the oldest example of deer hunting virtually on the market. While there have been no new versions released lately, it does offer the hunter classic hunting techniques. The graphics aren’t of the quality of some of the other games, but for the hunter who wants just the basics, this is a nice option.

Have you ever enjoyed hunting deer with dogs? Did you enjoy the hunting sport? But some time it is not possible to always spot the deer especially in the Southern states. You will come across different terrains to locate the deer. Sometime to hunt one animal we use other animals like dogs for hunting the deer. I have no experience of using them for hunting but have seen them in action. But more than the dog hunter the foxhunters are considered a good sport.

Another poacher of my acquaintance had a deer dog that was deer proof. So much so that the owner offered a suspicious warden one hundred dollars if he (the warden) could persuade the dog to chase a deer. The warden was satisfied and the dog’s owner was perfectly safe in making the offer, but that dog was about the best aid that a poacher could wish. Healthy deer were perfectly safe from him. I saw a deer run within a hundred feet of the dog and he never even looked at the deer. It was different when his master used his gun. The dog would be off at the sound of the shot and, if the deer had been wounded and not killed, he would chase, catch and hold the animal until the man could approach and make the kill.

Most of the legal deer hunting in which dogs are used is done in some of the Southern States—in areas where there are large private estates. It seems to be more a “gentleman’s sport” than one the common people can enjoy—more a holdover of the English nobility or southern aristocracy idea than a sport of American democracy.

The excuse is that the deer are in such inaccessible places that the use of dogs is necessary in order to have any success at all. I know that there are many places in the South which I would not want to enter and where it would be almost impossible to see a deer, let alone to shoot one, but we have a few places here in Maine that are nearly as bad. I know of one tract of several thousand acres where deer are plentiful, but hunters shun it. There is no visibility and I often have been forced to crawl on hands and knees in order to make any progress. Such places are better left as sanctuaries where deer will have a chance to live and increase.

The overflow from these areas would soon provide good hunting in neighboring sections. I believe that it is better to do this than it is to use dogs to drive the last deer out of the refuge, to be shot by a favored few. The shooting of deer from trains, airplanes and automobiles is illegal in most places, and rightly so. Aside from the sporting angle, the use of a loaded gun in a confined space can be dangerous to anyone who may be with the shooter.

Accidents can happen and it is senseless to expose any one to any unnecessary risks. From a sporting standpoint, riding along a road with a gun stuck out of the window of an automobile and shooting any deer that might be seen, is about as sporting as shooting fish in a barrel. Deer have not acquired a fear of automobiles and will often feed in full view of a highway, to the delight of nature lovers. To take advantage of the deer’s lack of fear is, definitely, not sporting.

Even though it is great fun to hunt the deer, I believe that the more you take care in hunting the better you care safe from any unlawful or accidents. Unfearful nature of deer can sometime be a delight to the nature’s lovers and they are dangerous as well when you travel on the highways. There are some good dogs that could be of good help when going for hunting deer. And there some dogs again that does not like to hunt for deer. They are called deer proof. Deer hunting could earn you a good amount of money as well if you know how to trade it.

With deer hunting right around the corner you may be in the market for a rifle. If you are just getting into deer hunting or replacing old faithful, there is no reason you have to spend more than $600 to get a great rifle. The Savage 16FXP3 is a perfect example of a great deer hunting rifle for about $550. It comes with bore-sighted scope, AccuTrigger, and sling. Just add case and ammo. Granted you will probably want to upgrade the scope in the future especially if you have that nice tree stand on the edge of a large corn field.

For many hunters like me price and performance dictates what I purchase. I’m purchasing for function not good looks. I want something that will last, maintain accuracy, and hold up in any weather year after year, not something to hang above the mantle. Bolt action is the choice of many experienced hunters. Many times one shot is all you get, make it count. Semi-Auto rifles can be alluring but seldom practical.

Many people are unaware that you can purchase firearms online. This process is legal and regulated just like purchasing from your local dealer down the road, except it’s a lot less expensive. Online dealers can save you hundreds of dollars when purchasing firearms. You still need to use your local firearm dealer to transfer the firearm and fill out the required paperwork. Typically a dealer will charge $25 – $50 to process the transfer.

In addition to the Savage, below is a quick review of five more rifles that can be purchased online for less than $600.

Tikka T3 Lite:

Built by Sako and imported by Beretta. This Finnish rifle is accurate and exceptionally smooth. The Adjustable trigger is one of the best on the market.

Remington 770:

This sub $400 rifle comes mounted with a scope. This is one of the better deals for the budget or beginner hunter.

Howa 1500:

This is very similar to the Weatherby Vanguard. It’s Affordable, accurate and reliable. What more could you ask for?

Marlin 336:

It’s chambered in the old time favorite, the 30-30. The 30-30 has taken more deer then any other hunting caliber, and is still widely used through out the US. The short barrel and quick handling make this an excellent choice in areas where the maximum shot is under 150yds.

New England Firearms Handi Rifle:

This simple and effective single shot is the perfect choice for young hunters. It’s the most affordable on the list coming in around $250.

If you fail to get any deer to hunt you can always take a quiet walk and enjoy the wilderness of the forest and the beautiful sights. And on the ways I have hunted down quite a few deer.

A hunting method favored by many is to walk the woods roads and trails as quietly as possible, usually against the wind, with the hope of jumping a deer to shoot. I enjoy this type of hunting in the less heavily populated areas. By traveling quietly while constantly watching for game, a man will see many wilderness sights that will often repay him for the walk even if he fails to bag a deer. I have killed quite a few deer by using this method and have seen many others that I did not shoot. On two occasions I have seen sleeping deer before they awoke. I permitted one of these to make a successful escape without firing a shot, but I killed the other a nice eight-point buck—as soon as it started to run. I have always considered that these two hunts were equally successful, although a memory was the only reward for one of them.

One of the most important requirements for this type of hunting is good eyesight. Not necessarily 20-20 vision, but the ability to evaluate the constantly changing scene and to distinguish the difference between shadow and concrete objects. The ability to pick out one of the best camouflage of animals in its natural habitat. This hunting vision is not a thing that we are born with. It must be acquired and cultivated by hunting experience.

Most people seem to be looking for a picture-book deer when in the woods and fail to recognize the real thing until it starts to run. It is often too late then to do anything except to take a snap shot, through the brush, at a target that is hard to hit. When hunting in this manner, I do not look for deer, but watch for anything that seems to be unusual or out of place. By doing this, I see many things, as well as an occasional deer.

Motion, of course, is the first thing that attracts the eye, but motion in the woods seldom indicates a deer. I do not know of any place where deer so out number other animals that a person could expect all motion to be that of deer. Squirrels, rabbits, foxes, minks, weasels, grouse and other birds and animals will attract the eye, so that I have always had a slight feeling of surprise when motion in the woods turns out to be a deer. Nobody should have any trouble in identifying the motion of a deer that is startled and leaves the area in a rush with an upraised flag, but the one that tries to sneak off, or stands undecided, is a different matter. These deer may appear to be something other than deer and must be positively identified before it is safe to shoot. Sometimes motion that is thought to be something else turns out to be a deer, and in such cases the person who is able to see well will benefit by having a good hunting vision.

Good eyesight is a must for hunting deer to constantly evaluate the movements of the animal. It can be acquired by experience. And the books do not teach us all the tricks of the game which you can learn from doing them.

You know there are many odd things which may happen on a deer hunt. “There’s many a slip ‘twixt the cup and the lip” and a hunter never wants to start eating his deer until he has it dressed and hung up.

I could tell you of many such cases, some of which happened to me, others which happened to other hunters. Since I want to keep this as accurate as possible—as near truth as is possible without taxing credibility, always bearing in mind that truth is often stranger than fiction—I am going to tell you of a hunt where I was present, but one in which I did no shooting.

I was hunting with several men, including a man with whom I had often hunted. I will not reveal his name as it might cause him embarrassment, even though I am quite sure that there is a statute of limitations on game-law violations.

When quite near this man, I heard him shoot twice. He was using an automatic shotgun and when he pulled the trigger, anything he was aiming at would usually end up dead. He was one of the best wing shots I ever hunted with. Sometimes he would shoot twice at a particularly big deer, and I supposed that this was what he had done in this case. I waited for a short time, on the off chance that he had missed, for any deer that might be coming my way. I then went over to his position where I found him standing over a nice doe.

Two other men, strangers to me, had arrived there before me. Now this man and I were used to each other’s hunting mannerisms, and were close mouthed among strangers—a Yankee habit which gives us an undeserved reputation as rather cold individuals—so that when he maneuvered to a position where the others could not see, and gave me his signal, I knew he had shot two deer. Glancing in the direction of his pointed finger, I could see nothing; however, I made no investigation until after the strangers had gone their way.

Later, when he had the opportunity, he told me of shooting two deer and of having the disappointment of watching a big buck pass by and not daring to shoot at it because of the possibility of being caught with two in plain sight. We dressed out the doe, and then went towards the spot where the other deer had been lying. Before we reached the place, a fawn jumped up and bounded away into the thick woods. We were both so surprised that we stood rooted and watched it disappear. That fawn had been slightly wounded and when it had recovered from the initial shock, it had reverted to babyhood and stayed hidden and quiet until we approached its hiding place.

The big disappointment for this man was that he had not waited for the buck, but he had a good alibi. The buck was a long, long minute behind the doe, and when you think of the distance a deer can travel in that time, you can see that he was wise in taking the doe when he had the chance and not waiting for a buck which might not come.

Most of the time, the opportunity doesn’t come twice. And this also happen with the hunting. Use the opportunity in the maximize way; this will make the bigger chance for the hunter to get the result.

There are dozens of different types of deer hunting games available today; browsing the local entertainment store a hunter will come across many of them, most with a hefty price tag. However, there is another option for the budget conscious hunter; online deer hunting games are available at little, or even no cost. Many hunters however still have concerns about playing games online. What is required of your PC? Are the graphics realistic? How much space will they consume? The hunter has a few options to choose from, and each is slightly different.

ESPN Deer Hunting

This is probably one of the best games available online, and as with all the games in this article, it’s free. In most cases it takes only a few minutes to download and you’re off and hunting! The hunter will be given some options to choose from; he’ll need to choose which season he wants to hunt in, which weapon, and which deer stand he wants to bag his virtual trophy from. The game requires Flash, which is probably already installed on your computer, and is a fairly realistic online version.

Deer Drive

This game is a 3-D hunting experience like no other. It has a slightly different goal from the previous one, here you’re out to bag all the deer you can get! A herd of deer will be driven into your sights and you shoot at as many deer as your ammunition will allow, aiming for the bigger bucks. This game requires the hunter to have quick reactions and will be great for an adrenaline rush.

Hunting Unlimited 4

This game is also different from the previous two. The hunter is given missions to complete that provide a real challenge. There are twelve different species and six different landscapes where you can track your prey in the North American wilderness to the African safari. This game is great for the hunter looking for challenges to complete in a win/lose situation.

While the hunter has a lot of options for online games, finding a favorite shouldn’t be a problem as they all have different goals. Whether the hunter prefers a lot of different species to hunt, to sit in a blind and wait for his trophy whitetail, or complete challenges in a variety of situations, the hunter is bound to find one that suits his taste. Since so many of the online games are free, the hunter can try all of them to get a feel for what he likes.

Ohio, like many other states where deer hunting is a popular pastime, has strictly regulated seasons ensuring both the safety of the deer hunter, and for the preservation of the deer herd for seasons to come. The regulations are set forth by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division. While many hunters may not like the laws set forth by the DNR, it’s important that they be obeyed as the department spends much time and money researching the deer population. If many hunters took it upon themselves to disregard the laws in place, the deer population would plummet; some species throughout history are now extinct due to over-hunting.

One thing a hunter will need to get in Ohio is a hunting license. In order to get this a hunter must successfully complete a hunter safety course. Since many hunters take this course while still in school and probably don’t hold on to the certificate, presenting a previous license from another state, or signing an affidavit that you are over 21 and have previously held a hunting license in another state will suffice. Don’t fret however if you’ve not taken the course, they are available everywhere and are written at a fifth grade level. While there is no minimum age for a child to begin hunting, children 15 or younger must be accompanied by an adult at least 18 years of age.

Ohio regulations state it is legal to use any caliber handgun, rifle, shotgun that is 10 gauge or smaller, airgun, longbow with a draw weight of at least 40 pounds, or crossbow with a draw weight between 75 and 200 pounds to hunt deer. Trapping and spotlighting however are illegal, as is the use of voice transmitting devices while hunting. Hunting from motor vehicles other than boats or farm equipment is also prohibited. Also, for safety purposes, every hunter must have visible orange clothing on during open season.

As with any other state, Ohio also has regulations by season and time of day a hunter may hunt. Guns many not be fired before dawn or after dusk. Due to the popularity of hunting a variety of different species in public wildlife areas, these areas are closed from September 1st to May 1st to anyone not participating in hunting between 8pm and 6am, and 10pm and 6pm the remainder of the year. This ensures that only hunters are camping overnight and will therefore be outfitted with visible orange clothing.

Another great thing the state offers to ensure that what is killed is also used, are many organizations that accept donations of a portion of the venison to feed the needy.

Every hunter in the world is looking for the best trophy, a "Big Buck". Chances are, some of these enthusiastic hunters will actually have the opportunity to bring down a deer or two. Other hunters will spot these animals and make a shot but unfortunately miss, while others have no luck at all, they don’t detect any whitetail deer movement. Of course, it isn’t all about luck because meticulous preparation is required. Every whitetail deer hunter should comprehend five skills:

Stalking – this method consists of following the natural signs and the movement trails of the whitetail deer. This requires the ability to be very quiet so that the deer won’t suspect anything and also it requires basic knowledge of their habits.

Spot & stalk hunting – this is a variation of the stalking hunting technique but in this case the deer has been seen. The whitetail hunter uses his hunting skills in order to get close to the animal as much as he can so that he will have great chances for an efficient shot.

Stand hunting – this technique can be used from a tree or even on the ground. Both techniques require a great deal of patience. The deer hunter sets up his tree stand or he finds a place where he can hide and wait for the animal. With some rigorously pre-season investigation, whitetail deer runs can be easily detected, greatly improving the chances for an efficient hunting season.

Still hunting – with this method, the hunter walks silently then stops to listen and wait for the prey. This still hunting method is recommended when deer haven’t been seen but are known that they are in that area.

Line hunting – this method is used by a group of hunters. The main idea of it is that the deer are flushed out towards a line of whitetail hunters. This cooperative technique can bring great results if done properly.

The choice of weapon for a whitetail deer hunting adventure greatly depends on the area where the hunter lives but basically these animals are hunted with a gun such as a rifle or a shotgun. In some legal circumstances, hunters have the possibility to use muzzleloaders and handguns. Some old-fashioned hunters still use their bows and crossbows for their deer hunting adventure, it can be a very exciting thing to do but at the same time it is way harder in comparison with using a rifle. The bow hunting season usually starts before the regular gun season and will start again after the gun season is over.

Don’t forget about dry clothing as well as waterproof boots because low temperatures and soggy clothes increase the chances of hypothermia. Layers work better to keep you warm rather than bulky items. This also gives you more freedom to move around. Camouflage is very important and it greatly depends on the hunting area. Luckily, camouflage clothing comes in all sizes and shapes you could think of.

All things considered, planning a whitetail deer hunting adventure isn’t as easy as you might have thought but taking things nice and slow you will be fully equipped for a rewarding hunting adventure that you will remember for a long time.

There some occasion that it is difficult for the hunter to follow the tract. But fresh track is very easy to follow.

I will have to make it short, because we want to get an early start on the morrow.

Perhaps I had better tell you of one of my first deer hunting trips that happened before I was old enough to have a hunting license. This wasn’t in Maine, but deer hunting is the same wherever we hunt and this incident could happen to anyone.

I had never hunted game with a pump-action shotgun and on this day, I borrowed a friend’s gun of that type and went out to try to get a deer. Not knowing just where to look, I roamed the woods on the off-chance of seeing a big buck that was blind and hard of hearing, or one that would let me walk up to him for some other reason. There was about an inch of snow on the ground that made traveling kind of quiet, but all of the deer tracks I saw were old and not worth following. Probably it wouldn’t have made much difference if I had found a fresh track ’cause, at that time, I didn’t know how to take advantage of a fresh track anyhow.

After a while I came to a thick growth of hardwood sprouts. There was a woods road running through which made easy walking, and I took this road. The brush was thick on both sides of the road and the only place where I had a clear view was right down the middle. All of a sudden, a deer jumped into the road ahead of me. I brought the gun to my shoulder, but by that time the deer had crossed into the brush on the other side. While I was trying to get another glimpse of it, a second deer jumped into the road and I swung back to cover this one. This deer also crossed before I could get my sights on it. This happened with two other deer and I never fired a shot.

But, when the fifth deer jumped into the road, he did something that very few deer ever do. He turned and ran down the road, directly away from me. This time I sent a charge of buckshot right into his rear end. Of course, he kept on going and I stood there and tried to pull the trigger guard off the gun, thinking it was the second trigger of my double barrel. I never thought of the pump action until that deer was long gone.

Feeling kind of bad about wounding the deer, I followed the blood trail for about two miles. The deer rejoined the others and they traveled together until they came to a river that separated two states, where I left the trail.

Do you need any help with that corkscrew, Jim?

From this article we can take the conclusion that hunters can take the advantage on the fresh track; this will lead the hunters to the location of the deer.
